The iPhone X is a stunning phone, and a rare example of Apple trying something genuinely different. It’s good to see the company reaching beyond the usual design of the iPhone and attempting to innovate.
But is the iPhone X perfect? Definitely not.
Anyone who’s tried an iPhone X is bound to report some niggles, and in some cases, we think consumers would be better off buying a used iPhone 8 instead. Here are 5 good reasons to give the iPhone 8 a second look before you buy an iPhone X.
1. The iPhone 8 is Cheaper
Let’s get one thing out of the way: whether you buy new, or you pick up an affordable used iPhone, you’ll save a lot of money with the iPhone 8.
The two devices are almost identical in terms of their size and weight, and they both run the latest version of OS X.
Unless you need those extra camera megapixels, or the slightly larger screen, there’s a good chance that the iPhone 8 will do everything you need for far less cash.
2. We Prefer Touch ID to Face ID
Unlocking your phone with your face is a cool idea, but how well does it really work?
For one thing, using a fingerprint is generally more secure. When you’re using your phone for NFC payments, this is crucially important.
Touch ID is also faster, because it doesn’t need to gather all of the data that Face ID needs to check that it’s really you.
One final point: sometimes we need to unlock our phones without staring at the screen. That’s a great example of a time when Touch ID is tons more convenient.
3. The iPhone 8 Lasts Longer Per Charge
The iPhone X has good battery life. But if you like to avoid carrying a charger cable around, you’ll want to go with the 8 or 8 Plus.
Apple reports that iPhone 8 Plus users could get an extra two hours of battery life compared to the iPhone X. Even the regular iPhone 8 beats it.
4. The Specs are Not That Different
The iPhone X and the iPhone 8 have the same processor, front-facing camera, and wireless charging hardware.

5. The iPhone X Screen Has One Big Flaw
If you’ve tried watching a full-screen video on the iPhone X, you’ll probably have noticed that one niggly fault: the notch at the top takes a chunk out of the picture.
It’s the one downside to that big, beautiful screen, which is very slightly larger than the iPhone 8’s screen.
If you watch a lot of media, you might find that the 5.5 inch screen on the 8 Plus is preferable to the 5.8 inch screen and cut-out notch on the iPhone X.
